Buy
Local Week, November 23rd to 30th
As we are reminded each year when the Halloween goodies are replaced by
Christmas decorations, the holiday season is upon us. And with the
holidays come lots of shopping. Not only is this an opportunity to
share the love with people in your life (as well as receive gifts you'd
never buy yourself), but the holiday shopping season is a great time to
adopt more local spending habits. A San Francisco based study concluded
that a shift of just 10% of retail spending toward local business would
create 1,000 jobs and keep $200 million in the community.
So this season, look for gifts at the retailers in your neighborhood.
Our Local Flavor Guides will be released just in time to make this
easier.

Greetings
and Happy Halloween!
I hope you are enjoying the autumnal changes as much as I am. In this
newsletter you'll find lots of updates on the leadership of MHBA, our
community campaign, and new sponsorship opportunities available.
Local
Flavor Neighborhood Guides
We're teaming with one of our founding members, Local Flavor Marketing
Group, to design and distribute full-color and easy to carry guides
featuring some of Denver's unique neighborhoods. These guides will mark
the launch of our community local first campaign, and will support our
upcoming Buy Local Week, November 23rd - 30th.
Initial featured neighborhoods will include Old South Pearl, Old South
Gaylord, the Santa Fe Arts District, and East Colfax.
Local Flavor Marketing Group, LLC works to keep the "local flavor" of
Colorado's independent business alive and thriving. Local Flavor
Marketing Group provides marketing services (design, websites,
strategy, planning, etc.) exclusively for local, independent businesses
to help them successfully compete with national chains and big box
stores.
Look for tips to make your marketing efforts more successful in
upcoming newsletters, thanks to the Local Flavor folks!
Directors
"On Board"
Two preliminary meetings of the Mile High Business Alliance Board of
Directors have taken place in the past few weeks. We've accomplished
much in these meetings, and I'm very excited about the leaders who have
volunteered to help build and nurture the Alliance.
Current board members include:
- Neil Strandberg, President
- Neil is the Director of Operations for the Tattered Cover Book Store
and brings his dynamic leadership style, large vocabulary and passion
for local businesses.
- Sarah Wells, Secretary
- Sarah is an Associate Publisher of the ReDirect Guide. A local Tetris
champion, Sarah adds her commitment to sustainability and nifty fashion
sense to the Alliance.
- Tim Martinez, Treasurer
- Tim is a Sr. Economic Development Officer for the City of Denver's
Office of Economic Development. When he's not coaching his children's
soccer games, he shares his vision and dedication to creating a
sustainable economy in our region.
- Matt Chasansky
- Matt is the Exhibits Curator at the Aurora History Museum and has
many years experience with non-profit organizations. A passionate
localvore, he keeps his eye on how the Alliance can connect with
individuals in our community, raising awareness about the vital
importance of supporting local businesses.
- Arthur Brock
- Arthur is Geek Meister at the Geek Gene, and brings his
community-minded systems design to the Board. Arthur and his team are
currently building our online local business directory, which will be
launched very soon.
A huge thanks to these amazing, committed people. And speaking of
awesome people, we're also thrilled to introduce Rachelle, MHBA's new
Intern.
Sustainability
Grad Student joins MHBA
Rachelle Macur has joined MHBA
as an Intern Membership Coordinator. She's helping to get the word out
to local businesses about the Alliance and what we're up to. She will
also provide member support as we get more and more members in the
Alliance.
Growing up in the progressive town of Madison, WI, an appreciation for
community enrichment and environmental protection was instilled in
Rachelle at a very young age. Since graduating, she has traveled and
lived all over the world exploring various cultures and terrains,
recently settling in Denver. Rachelle is currently getting her Master's
degree in Anthropology and Sustainable Development. She possesses a
strong interest in community outreach and ecologically-minded
neighborhood design and planning. Rachelle is an outdoor enthusiast and
loves warm snowy days. Welcome, Rachelle!
We are excited about the great progress being made in the Alliance and
will soon announce the launch of our online Local Business Directory.
Thanks for being a part of building the Mile High Business Alliance,
and may your day be filled with lots of yummy treats!
