Denver Chefs Head for the Garden

I love seeing the wonderful work of Denver chefs sourcing locally, especially when it reaches national press like the New York Times. Having moved from New York City, I can attest to hearing little about localization efforts in Colorado until I made my move out West. However, after spending only a short time here, it was apparent that Colorado is abundant with locavores. From farm to table dining to non-profts focused on building community like Grow Local Colorado, opportunities to support your local food system are plentiful.

Kudos to all of the great local businesses featured in this article as you are an inspiration to us all.

Antique Row's "Better Broadway Bash"

Celebrates end of construction & lots of improvements

August 20 - 22

South Broadway's famous Antique Row has been suffering through construction obstacles and lane closures for months, as many of us have witnessed firsthand. At last, the construction is completed, the tree-lined median is in place, new light fixtures have been installed, and the merchants along Antique Row are ready to celebrate!

Their late August Better Broadway Bash also serves as the launch pad for the annual Antique Row Summer Festival, with three days of entertainment, free appraisals, sidewalk sales and more. The Festival also includes a $1000 Antique Row Shopping Spree gift certificate, good at any participating location.

Buy Local Week - Day 5

Buy Local Week - Why it matters.

  • Holiday spending represents a huge chunk of money for retailers -over $12 billion last year in CO.
  • Money spent at locally owned businesses recirculates at least three times more in our community.
  • Local businesses are more effective at meeting the community's needs more quickly than their bigger counterparts.

New Sandwich Sign Permits in Denver

The City of Denver has recently changed the laws controlling the use of sandwich board signs by businesses. It is now legal for businesses to use sandwich boards, BUT, they must be regulated by permit. This is to ensure that they are put in the right place, don’t create a pedestrian hazard, that inspection and enforcement costs are covered, etc.

Mayor Speaks Out About Local Business & Our Economy

Last night's Buy Local Week Celebration Event was, in our opinion, a smashing success. Joined by MHBA members, supporters, partners and other local business owners, it was our best event ever.

The Appaloosa food, specially prepared by their chef, was simply delicious. MHBA members enjoyed free drafts of Great Divide beer, and we finished up the evening with door prizes from T-Trove Asian Decor, 5 Green Boxes (wow, that green frog tape dispenser was so cool), Baggy Shirts, and $50 gift certificates from Twist & Shout and the Appaloosa Grill.

Denver loses another unique business

The Denver Post ran an article today about the closing of Neighborhood Flix, a locally-owned and independent cinema located on East Colfax. The cinema had been open less than a year, and served some of the best macaroni and cheese I've ever tasted.

Built upon concepts of art, community and one-of-a-kind experiences, the theatre served good popcorn for $3.50 and featured comfy couches to watch the big screen.

Green Frontier Fest Photos

We loved the Green Frontier Fest. Solar oven brownies, people-powered trains, Daryl Hannah and lots of sunshine. The Mile High Business Alliance joined a hundred businesses and several non-profit groups to share the latest in goods and services that are more sustainable (and more local). Here are a few photos from the event:

Talulah Jones (MHBA Member) is a treasure trove of beautiful items for yourself and home. I spied these very cool recycled bags that really summed up the event nicely:
